Хід уроку:

Вступна частина.

Association game. I give you the word and you tell me any associative
words to it.

Beauty, space, fresh, wildlife.

Great. And the next task is to think about the things that can’t exist
without each other.

Example: People can’t live without plants, animals, sunshine, water….

(Animals, plants, the planet.)

Your home task
was?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Основна частина уроку.

We have identified that the world is not only beautiful, but also
everything is connected on the Earth. The harmony is the main feature of
our life and only if the harmony exists we can live happily. But the
situation is not perfect now. Listen to some sayings and tell me what
the problem is.

“When the last tree is cut down and the last fish killed, the last river
poisoned, then you will see that you can not eat money” (Greenpeace
message)

“Look after this planet, it’s the only one we have” (Prince Philip of
Britain)

“Mother planet is showing us the red warning light – “be careful” – she
is saying. To take care of the planet is to take care of our own house.”
(The Dalai Lama)

And there are many problems that we can’t but discuss. We’ll need some
new vocabulary to do it. First look at the blackboard and pronounce the
words after me. And now I give you the cards with the word and its
explanation. Try to read and translate the sentences.

Environment is the land, water and air in which people, animals and
plants live.

To pollute – to make air, water, soil, etc dangerously dirty.

Pollution is the process of polluting the place.

To cause means to make something happen.

Destruction is the act or process of destroying something.

Shortage is the situation in which there is not enough of something that
is needed.

Dump is a place where unwanted waste is taken and left

To dump means to drop or put something somewhere in a careless way.

Waste means things you no longer want.

Poison is a substance that can kill you or make you sick if you eat it,
breathe it, etc.

To poison means to make the land, lakes, rivers dangerous by adding
harmful chemicals to it.

Nuclear means relating to the central part of an atom.

Weapon is something that you use to fight with.

To survive means to continue to exist.

To endanger means to put someone or something in a dangerous or harmful
situation.

Well done! And now I give you only definitions and you say one of the
new words which are still on the blackboard.

And now I shall read the text for you. Listen carefully, pay attention
at the new words. After listening you will be asked to fill in the
spaces with the words.

This word “environment” means simply what is around us. The air we
breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk, the water we drink are all
parts of the environment. Nowadays we understand that in order to
survive people must try to solve the environmental problems that
endanger their lives. The most serious environmental problems are:

pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear
pollution);

dumping;

noise from cars, planes, trains;

destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty;

shortage of natural resources (water, metals, different kinds of fuel);

the growth of population.

(Underlined words are to be written in the spaces. The blackboard or
individual work may be applied).

Now I would like you to work with the tables. If you agree to the
statement, write “+”, if not, mark it with “– “.

The air is polluted.

There is not enough clean water on the planet now.

The destruction of wildlife is a serious problem.

The soil is poisoned with chemicals.

The cars pollute the atmosphere and endanger people’s health.

The nuclear pollution after Chernobyl catastrophe is still essential.

Forests all over the world need protection.

How many pluses have you got? So I understand that you agree with the
sayings we have started with.

Well, you’ve been working hard since the beginning of the lesson. Let’s
relax and imagine that we are in the forest. It is an early summer. The
trees are fresh green. Their shadows protect your faces from the hot
sun, but you feel some warm rays on your cheeks. The leaves whisper, the
birds sing, the flowers smell so pleasant. You are happy and you enjoy
the forest.

And now try to imagine the same forest in 100 years. What has changed?
What do you feel and what do you see?

(Pupils tell the class about their images and they usually are
pessimistic and dreary.)

In fact it was not an accident that I asked you to think about the
forest. Actually it may change in some years. There are many species of
animals and plants that are endangered. Some of them are almost extinct.
You know that such species are registered in The Red Book. There are
plenty that have already disappeared, but some of them can still be
saved.

I have prepared some information for you from the electronic
Encyclopedia of US. All of you remember one of the symbols of the USA –
the bald eagle. But do you know that the bird is almost extinct? Let’s
see.

(Install the disk, press World Book Encyclopedia, find the word eagle
from the list and press OK, page 12, the bald eagle) There you will find
the following information.)

????©?ome of these pollutants built up in the bodies of fish that the
eagles ate. In most cases the pollutants didn’t kill the bird but they
affected their ability to reproduce.

(Press reference, main index, US animals and plants index, Eagle, Bald,
OK. Here you may find the pictures, the sounds and some information
about the bird.)

And as a conclusion of the lesson finish the following sentences.

When the last tree is cut down and the last fish killed, the last river
poisoned, then you will see….

Pollution is the process of….

This word “environment” means….

The most serious environmental problems are….

The number of bald eagles also dropped because of….

Аналіз, оцінки.

Домашнє завдання: find the information about other endangered species
and write a short report, learn the new words.
