In the thesis the peculiarities of the scenic choreographic culture in
Eastern Galicia (1920-1930) within the context of the European art
having the great impact on it are investigated and its interrelations
with national and folklore dance traditions, in particular, are
conformed. The study of the considerable number of sources, the majority
of them used for the first time, made it possible to systematize the
material in accordance with modern scientific requirements. As a result
of the complex analysis of the wide range of the regional choreographic
culture phenomena, its simplified or one-sided esteem of its role and
meaning in the system of national art were reconsidered.

Reflecting general tendencies and contradictions of the European art
development, choreographic culture in Eastern Galicia represented to be
the integral phenomenon and its development level corresponded with the
majority of young national schools. The specific character of historic
and cultural conditions favored the creation of the original image of
this new, though provincial so far, choreographic center. Traditions of
romantic epoch and academic ballet were preserved predominantly in the
Opera theatre ballet troupe performances. It considered to be the
leading one in the region (ballet-masters – S.Falishevski, A.Fortunato,
A.Romanovski, M.Statkevich). At the same time the influence of new
artistic trends was gradually growing. As a result, the amount of the
single-act performances considerably increased with determinative
tendency to deepen the psychological charge of the dance and to enhance
the role of the pantomime. The impact of the “modern” ideas, penetrating
from the West, was distinctively noticeable in ballet theatre, though
they also had the defining significance for the development of the
modern dance trends (“modern dance”) and genres (chamber dance) in
Galicia. However, the perception of the aesthetic and technical
innovations of the leading European pedagogues was not literal: local
choreographers assimilated successfully on the national basis. The
regional dance “modern” appealed to the images of the national art,
creating psychological, symbolic and mystic “interpretation” of many
typical themes. Choreographic stylizations of some genres (chorale, in
particular) were the original synthesis of the European and national
stylistic systems. It was the evidence of the neoclassical tendency
manifestation, which was especially significant for the regional music
creation of the above mentioned period and at the same time the origin
of the trend, innovative in its essence, primarily showing itself in the
sphere of chamber dance, based on the national images.

The original character of the choreographic culture in Galicia developed
itself in the most vivid way in folklore dance. The main figure in the
process of its development was ballet-master V.Avramenko. One of his
merits is the essential deepening of the previous period achievements.
Using the principle of free arrangement of folklore originals, enriching
them by the elements of theatre, developing lexical means and
composition, the choreographer reformed the style of the scenic folklore
dance considerably, which encouraged its final formation as independent
scenic genre with original aesthetic and expressive means.

The entity of the choreographic culture of Eastern Galicia during the
period of the 20th-30th of the 20th century conditioned on its different
spheres interaction and interference, synchronic development of the
relative themes and images, mutual enrichment of the expressive means of
various kinds of dance. Educational institutions, organized by the
leading choreographers, their popularizing and methodic activities in
tight cooperation with public organizations played the significant role
in the development process. The development of the theoretical thought
in this field was encouraged by constant attempts to systematize and
ground various notions in special working out of the theoretical and
methodological character.

Thus, the achievements of the scenic choreographic culture in Eastern
Galicia became the evidence of the completion of the formation stage of
the regional school and formation of the solid base for its further
development.

The perspective trends for further research of the theme appeared in the
process of work, which were not involved in the field of the problems
under analysis. Their investigation is to encourage the further process
of the deepening of knowledge range concerning the national
choreographic culture and its ways of development.
