Present thesis is devoted to the studies of the single-particle and collective excitations at the collisions of low-energy (0–20 eV) electrons with metal and semiconductor surfaces. Two types of electron spectrometers – the trochoidal and hypocycloidal – have been developed and optimized providing the high incident electron monoenergicity (~15 meV) and resolution when studying the low-energy electron backscattering (LEEBS) processes. The advantages of the hypocycloidal spectrometer are shown. The methods of studying the elementary processes at slow electron interactions with condensed systems (crystalline and amorphous solids, deposited films and adsorbed molecules) have been developed. The studies of the energy dependences of the intensity of elastic LEEBS, energy-loss spectra and constant residual energy spectra at LEEBS for Au, Ag, Cu, BiTeJ, BiTeBr, GeS, As2S3, GaAs and Si have been performed. The relationship of the energy positions of the peculiarities in the energy dependences of the elastic scattering intensity, the energy-loss spectra and the constant residual-energy spectra with the energy distances between the high-symmetry Brillouin zone points and the surface electron states related to the direct and indirect excited electron transitions has been found. The energy-loss spectra and the constant residual energy spectra appeared to be the most sensitive to the surface electron states and adsorbed molecules. The revellation of the peculiarities in these spectra at E<4 eV is of the resonant nature. The data on the LEEBS spectra agree well with the theoretical calculations and considerably complement the known experimental results on the electron energy structure of objects under study (Au, Ag, Cu, BiTeJ, BiTeBr, GeS, As2S3, GaAs, Si).
