Dzera O. V. Individual author’s treatment of Biblical motifs as a
Translation Studies problem (based on Ukrainian translations of Byron’s
writings). – Manuscript.
A thesis for the Scholarly Degree of Candidate of Philology in
speciality 10.02.16 -Translation Studies. – Kyiv Taras Shevchenko State
University, Kyiv, 1999.
The dissertation highlights individual author’s comprehension of
Biblical motifs as reproduced in translations. It is the first
exhaustive study of intertextual Ukrainian Byroniana, a many-sided
analysis of the theme of Cain in Franko’s interpretation both as
translator (of Byron’s closet tragedy Cain) and author (of the legend
The Death of Cain). It is also an attempt at working out the criteria
for a consistent classification of genres (types) of poetic translation.
The dissertation consists of an introduction, two chapters,
conclusions, list of references and appendices.
Chapter 1 elaborates a definition of the motif at large and that of
Biblical motif in particular. It also provides the analysis of the
interpretative conceptions of Ukrainian translators of Byron’s Cain, the
classification of Biblical topoi and methods of target language
rendition.
The motif is considered as the smallest compressed abstracted semantic
invariant of the text enshrined by global and ethnic traditions. Motif
has a three-tier structure in the secondary text: denotative information
reflecting the diagnostics of the prototext; connotative concomitant
information shaping its contextual variation in the secondary text;
local information specifying the ethnolingual picture of the world.
Diagnostic information being the kernel one, singles out the motif as a
constituent of discourse.
Owing to the dual (sacred and ethnopoetic) nature of the Bible,
Biblical motif is being actualized in the author’s text both on the
macrostylistic (thematic) and microstylistic (lingual) levels. Textual
manifestation of the motif, the topos, is both a constituent of the
coherent whole and ethnically bound evincement of the invariant.
Biblical motif is subjected to the complex process of accumulating,
shifting and obliterating its semantic components. Each translator of a
creative work based on Biblical motifs faces the problem of the clash
of cultures which consists in the diverging background information in
the target and source languages encompassing different principles of
domestication of the Bible, varying extralingual allusions brought about
by a Biblical motif, multiple evaluation strategies of the Bible,
eventually incongruous apocryphal traditions. The utmost task of a
translator consists in recreating Biblical motifs following the author’s
conceptualization, i. e. combining the diagnostics of the motifs with
their contextual variability. The said approach, however, also
envisages a possibility of latent allegorization due to the semantic
extension of the motif in its certain topoi.
As a result of the individual author’s treatment the Biblical motif of
fratricide is actualized in Byron’s Cain by formal and stylistic
criteria in conformity with the essence of figurative associations
covering both occasional ornamental insets and significant symbols.
A contrastive analysis of topologically marked words in the original and
its Ukrainian translations reveals two major strategies in rendering
Biblical motifs: (1) overcoding which combines decorative (broadening
the diagnostics of the motif due to Biblical realia) and figurative
(extending the diagnostics of the motif with Biblical images) changes;
(2) undercoding which consists in levelling the diagnostic component of
the Biblical motif.
Chapter 2 focuses on ways and methods of differentiating genres of
poetic translation in Ukrainian renderings of the lyrics in Hebrew
Melodies.
In terms of the Polysystem theory (first introduced by E. Even-Zohar in
a series of papers written from 1970 to 1977) translation is considered
as an integral constituent of the aggregate literary systems. It is
believed to be both a factor influencing the target literature and a
result of its moulding. It is further suggested that while the term
literary genre defines the criteria of classifying the original works
according to their poetic structure the proposed term genre of poetic
translation is deemed to delineate the criteria for the translated
literary writings by the kinds of correlation between primary and
secondary elements in their discourse structure.
The general criteria for differentiating genres of poetic translation
consist in the prevalence of linguostylistic and ethnolingual elements
of either the source or target cultural polysystems in the structure of
the translated text (transfusion, paraphrase, imitation) and in the
degree of recreating the semantic dominants of the original (variation,
version) in the target text.
The looseness of the codified textual norms of the Ukrainian versions of
the Holy Scripture (unlike the rigorous text of the King James Version
of the English Bible, 1611) and a selective culture-bound approach to
its topical allusions account for the genre multiplicity of translations
of global Biblical metatexts of the type of Byron’s Hebrew Melodies.
The findings of the submitted thesis will contribute to the theory and
history of literary translation with particular reference to the
Ukrainian milieu. They will constitute a substantial contribution to
Ukrainian Byroniana.
Key words: Biblical motif, topos, secondary metacommunication,
genre of translation, transposition, domestication, polysystem,
semantic dominant, overcoding, undercoding.
