Rotaru Sofia Mihailivna was born on the 9th of August, 1947 in the
village Marshintsi, Chernigov region, in a large family, with many
children. She was brought up in the atmosphere of folk songs, she knew
all the melodies, broadcast on the radio. She began to sing when she was
at the first grade – in school chorus and church choir, though the
latter wasn’t welcomed. In her youth she took part in the dramatic
group, sung folk songs in the amateur theatricals, won in regional and
republican competitions. She made up her mind to become an actress, in
1964 she entered the Chernigov music school and in 1968 she graduated
from it.Tnen she appeared on the stage of The Kremlin Congress Palace.

After the acquaintance with her future husband Anatoly Evdokimenko,
the student of Chernigov University and at the same time the
trumpet-player of the student pops orchestra, the singer decided to try
herself as a solo singer of a pops orchestra. Of course, she went on
singing folk songs which still take a significant place in her
repertoire. In 1968 Sophia Rotaru became the laureate of the IX World
Youth Festival in Sophia, Bulgaria, she got the gold medal for the
Ukrainian folk song. Nobody hesitated in star future of young actress.
At that time Rotaru began to teach theory and solfeggio in Chernigov
cultural and educational school, and in 1974 she graduated from the
correspondence department of Kishenev State University of Arts.

1971 Rotaru played a leading role in a music film “Chervona Ruta”,
called so after a soundtrack from this film by the talented composer

V. Ivasuk, with whom Rotaru had a productive creative cooperation.

It also became the name of vocally-instrumental consort, formed by
Rotaru and Evdokimenko in the Chernigov Philharmonic Hall ( Anatolij,
who later graduated from the producer faculty of Kiev University of
Arts, became then the producer of all concerts of Sofia).

Musical and acting talent of Rotaru is confirmed by different awards
and prizes.1973 in Bulgaria at the competition Golden Orpheus Rotaru won
the first prize .1973 she became the Honoured artist of Ukrainian Soviet
Socialist Republic, in 1983 – People’s artist of the USSR. She was
awarded a medal Mark of Order (1980), Friendship of Nations (1985),
Honorary Award and St. princess Olga. Now the whole world respects
Rotary for her songs.

According to Sofia Mihailovna, her soul is in her songs. “ The song
for me is a short story with its own world of feelings, dramaturgic
system, characters….” Such short stories for her became the songs of V.
Ivasuk

While Mrs. Rotaru commonly goes by this last name, her official
last name is Yevdokymenko-Rotaru. Yevdokymenko was the last name of her
late husband. Following several months of mourning, Rotaru resumed her
feverish concert and recording activity and again topped the Russian and
Ukrainian charts.

her neck surrounded by a bunch of beads, and she wore a cute apron with
national ornaments on her hips. In a word, it was the loved and
respected popular Ukrainian singer… Her repertoire was reasonably well
chosen. The audience took up her songs right form the first words.

The audience joined in singing the song “Raspberry wine” with a
particular enthusiasm.

The competitor told that Sophia Rotaru’s image was not accidental:
“Rotaru is my favourite singer. Not only does she conquer the audience
with her stunning energy, but also with love that always wins in her
songs”. According to the competitor, not the victory but the
participation is the most important for him. He thinks out his dresses,
hair-style and make-up on his own.

All of her hard work paid off. She has come a long way from her
tragic marriage and seems to be pleased with her life now.Sophia Rotary
seems always be yong and beautiful and will continue to charm the world
with her beaytiful smole and voice.
