MY NATIVE CITY
Kyiv is my native city. It’s an ancient city.
Ancient Kyiv was a large commercial centre of the East Slavs.
During the reign of Prince Volodimir the city expanded greatly. Under
the rule of Prince Yaroslav the Wise many churches and cathedrals and
monasteries appeared in the city.
There are a lot of places of historical importance in Kyiv. Among them
there are the Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra, the Golden Gate, the St. Sophia’s
Cathedral.
For those who love Kyiv so dearly as I do, it’s very difficult to choose
some places of the particular interest.
If the day is fine and the sky is cloudless, I’d like to go to the
Golden Gate. It is situated in the centre of the city. From the top of
the Gates we can admire a splendid view of the city.
I also like the St. Sophia’s Cathedral. Prince Yaroslav the Wise is
buried there.
Kyiv has changed greatly recently. There appeared a lot of small І
caffees, cosy restaurants, different shops and stalls.
MY LAST WINTER HOLIDAYS
I spent my last winter holidays in Kyiv. This year I did not go
anywhere.
Our winter holidays began on the 27th of December. On that day we had a
New Year party at school. We had prepared an amateur performance with
Father Frost and Snow-Maiden. There were different competitions, we
played different games. Then we had a dance party. That day we had a lot
of fun.
I like winter for a number of holidays we celebrate at the beginning of
a new year. First of all this is New Year Day.
On the 7th of January our family celebrates Christmas. I like this
holiday very much too.
The period of the winter holidays is rich in different shows and
performances. This year we chose the show in the circus. I think there
is nobody in the world who can be tired of the circus. I liked the
clowns most of all. Their tricks were so funny.
But the time during the holidays flies so quickly. Certainly I read some
books which I dreamt to read but I didn’t have free time for this.
This year the weather was really New Year’s one. It was rather snowy and
one day we set off to the Golosyivsky Park to ski. We had a nice day
there.

MY ATTITUDE TO SPORTS
If you want to be healthy, strong and beautiful you should go in for
sports.
When I go in for sports I feel myself wonderfully. I don’t sneeze or
cough. I am cheerful, active and full of energy. In summer I go
swimming. I enjoy spending winter holidays in the country. There I can
ski or skate. Certainly it depends on the weather.
For those who have already determined to go in for sport is very
important to choose the kind of sport he likes best.
First touch to sports and games we make in childhood. In school we
discover our favourite sports and games. That’s why the lessons of
physical training at school are very important.
At school we have PT lessons twice a week. Those who want to become
professionals attend specialized sport sections.
As for me I enjoy basketball. Basketball is a dynamic and inetersting
game. It develops many good qualities such as rapid action, will-power
and collective spirit.
I have already realized that sport is desperately necessary for
everybody.
MY LAST VISIT TO THE THEATRE
І liсе the traditional scenery, skill-made costumes. And of course it’s
very important what plays are in the repertoire. The Kyiv Ukrainian
Drama Theatre always chooses the plays for its repertoire very
thoroughly.
Sometimes it is very difficult to get tickets to the performance.
Not long ago I visited The Ukrainian Drama Theatre, where I saw the play
“The Pious Martha” by the Spanish playwright Lope de Vega.
The leading parts in the performance were played by the well-known
actors. Generally speaking this production has an excellent cast.
This time our seats were in the second row of the pit. Before the
beginning of the performance we bought a bill.
There is a lot of music in this production. But what I especially
enjoyed in this performance was the sense of humour which permeated the
whole performance.
I consider it was one of the best performances I have seen this season,

HOLIDAYS IN UKRAINE
Almost every country has holidays honouring important events in its
history.
‘ Some holidays come on the same date, some are movable.
. We celebrate the first day of Cristmas on the 7th of January. On the
6th of January people cook much food because the day after we must not
work. on this day we have a sacred supper or Kolyada. It begins when the
first star lights up. As the legend says, this star announced the birth
of the God’s Son. We celebrate Christmas for three days. In the evening
a group of boys comes. They sing songs. By these songs they congratulate
on holiday.
^ Another religious holiday is Easter. It is movable. In Ukraine we have
special attributes of Easter: Easter eggs, we call them “krashenka” and
Easter cakes “paska”. It is a very nice spring holiday.
New Year’s Day is very popular all over the world. It is my favourite
holiday.
Victory Day is on the 9th of May. It is a sacred holiday for every
Ukrainian citizen. We are thankful to our grandfathers for the victory.

MY ATTITUDE TO THE LEARNING OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES
I am sure every well educated person should speak English, because it
is the language of communication, business, science and culture.
English is now the most important and widespread language in the world.
It is the state language in five countries: Great Britain, Canada, the
USA, Australia and New Zealand, In many Asian and African countries
people speak English besides their native one. People also speak English
in Europe. English is spoken practically all over the world.
Independent Ukraine has relations with many countries.
Hundreds of joint ventures have appeared in every city and town of
Ukraine recently. A lot of foreign delegations come to our country. Our
businessmen, tourists go abroad. That is why it is very important to
learn English.
Nowadays a lot of people study foreign languages in every possible way.
I think English is worth studying. There is a proverb “A new language –
a new world”.
It’s a pity that not much attention is paid for studying foreign
languages in our schools. That’s why those who want to improve their
knowledge have to take private lessons.
MY PLANS FOR FUTURE
I am a school leaver and a problem of choosing a profession is the most
urgent for me now.
As the most of my friends I am going to enter the university or some
other higher educational institution. I expect to get a “Certificate of
Maturity” with good marks. But I think the entrance exams is a serious
test for me if I want to continue my education.
My parents want me to enter the department in some way connected with
management. But I doubt if I have needed personal qualities for this
job.
There is one more possibility to continue my education. I mean some
secondary specialized school. May be I’ll choose accountancy. A
competent accountant is needed everywhere.
If I don’t enter a college or university I’ll try to learn to type and
to operate the computer. Certainly I’ll go on studying English. I am
sure without this knowledge it is impossible to get a good job.
MY WORKING DAY
I’d like to describe you my working day. All the days looked very much
the same.
On weekdays I usually get up at 7. I do my morning exercises. Then I
wash my face and hands and clean my teeth. At half past seven I am ready
to have my breakfast. I like to have a quick light breakfast. After
breakfast I leave for school
My school is not far from my house. It takes me 10 minutes to get to
school. My lessons begin at 8.30 a.m. and finish at about 3 p.m. Six or
seven lessons a day is the ordinary timetable. Twice a week I stay at
school after classes to play basketball.
When I come home I have dinner. Then I rest a little. Sometimes I read a
book or talk to my friends over telephone.
After that I start doing my home assignments. Twice a week I go to have
private lessons in Maths in order to improve my knowledge.
As a rule, I finish doing my homework at about 11 o’clock. But one day a
week is not so busy. This is Thursday. On Thursday I usually help my
mother. Sometimes I do shopping or pick up clothes at the cleaner’s.
I usually have supper at 8 o’clock p.m.. Then I go on with my work. At
11 o’clock I go to bed.
