SONNET 65

Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea,

But sad mortality o’er-sways their power,

How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea,

Whose action is no stronger than a flower?

O, how shall summer’s honey breath hold out

Against the wreckful siege of battering days,

When rocks impregnable are not so stout,

Nor gates of steel so strong, but Time decays?

O fearful meditation! where, alack,

Shall Time’s best jewel from Time’s chest lie hid?

Or what strong hand can hold his swift foot back?

Or who his spoil of beauty can forbid?

O, none, unless this miracle have might,

That in black ink my love may still shine bright.

P.4. He was not of an age but “for all time” – these words were said by
Benjamin Johnson, a playwright and a player, and a good friend of
Shakespeare about the greatest of all poets.

Who was that William Shakespeare of Stratford? More has been written
about him, then about any writer that were lived And yet although we
know more about him then most of his contemporaries. There are certain
things, that historians cannot say with a firm-“This, then is the
final, the absolute truth”. While reading any biographical book about
William Shakespeare. We may be surprised at a large number of such
sentences as: “It is possible that…”. “We have no track of what
Shakespeare did during these years!..”, or – “History doesn’t help us
to break the silence of the 7 years he spent in London”, and so on.
But, in fact, Wil1іam Shakespeare loved the world, 1оved the peop1e, and
1оved to love.

P.5.

Not from the stars do I my judgment pluck;

And yet methinks I have astronomy,

But not to tell of good or evil luck,

Of plagues, of dearths, or seasons’ quality;

Nor can I fortune to brief minutes tell,

Pointing to each his thunder, rain and wind,

Or say with princes if it shall go well,

By oft predict that I in heaven find:

But from thine eyes my knowledge I derive,

And, constant stars, in them I read such art

As truth and beauty shall together thrive,

If from thyself to store thou wouldst convert;

Or else of thee this I prognosticate:

Thy end is truth’s and beauty’s doom and date.

Cohеt 14

P.6.The facts are very few. Shakespeare was probably born on the 23 of
April 1564 in Stadford-on-Avon. His father was a respectable shopkeeper
and his mother Mary Arden was a farmen’s daughter. William was the
eldest of eight children.

P.7.We know that when Shakespeare was 18, he married Anne Hathaway, a
woman eight years elder than himself, that in 1583 Susanna, their first
child, was born. Then two twins, Hannet and Judith, followed in 1583. At
the age of twenty two Shakespeare left.

He is refused to have been all manner of things: from sailor and
soldier to lawyer’s clerk and householder outside an early London
playhouse. We know that in 1593 and 1594 he wrote two early poems
“Venus and Adonis” and “Lucrece”.

P.4.Shakspeare gets married to a common, early girl. He knows, she isn’t
an ideal, but he loves her.

P.1.

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;

Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

I have seen roses damask’d, red and white,

But no such roses see I in her cheeks;

And in some perfumes is there more delight

Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

That music hath a far more pleasing sound;

I grant I never saw a goddess go;

My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.

And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

As any she belied with false compare.

P.2. Notum est amorem ceacum esse.

P. 8 Later, he became a member of the company know as “Chemberlains Men”
which played at the “Theatre”, and wrote for the company. He was already
reaching the night of his fame when the Globe Theatre was built in 1593.
He often acted at court and retired about 1611 to
Stadford,???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Ave Maria”

SONNET 29

When, in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes,

I all alone beweep my outcast state

And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries

And look upon myself and curse my fate,

Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,

Featured like him, like him with friends possess’d,

Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope,

With what I most enjoy contented least;

Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,

Haply I think on thee, and then my state,

Like to the lark at break of day arising

From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven’s gate;

For thy sweet love remember’d such wealth brings

That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Р.10. There has been a good deal of debate about the extent of
Shakespeare learning. It is that he never went to university or
travelled abroad.

P.2.In Venere semper certat dolor et gaudium

Р.4. Being a noble person Shakespeare didn’t want to hurt his beloved
girl.

SONNET 71

No longer mourn for me when I am dead

Then you shall hear the surly sullen bell

Give warning to the world that I am fled

From this vile world, with vilest worms to dwell:

Nay, if you read this line, remember not

The hand that writ it; for I love you so

That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot

If thinking on me then should make you woe.

O, if, I say, you look upon this verse

When I perhaps compounded am with clay,

Do not so much as my poor name rehearse.

But let your love even with my life decay,

Lest the wise world should look into your moan

And mock you with me after I am gone.

Р. 12

The Woodspurge

The wind flapped loose, the wind was still,

Shaken out dead from tree and hill;

I had walked on at the wind’s will

I sat now, for the wind was still.

Between my knees my forehead was

My lips drawn in, said not Alas!

My hair was over the grass,

My naked ears heard the day pass.

My eyes, wide open, had the run

Of some ten weeds to fix upon;

Among those few, out of the sun,

The woodspurge flowered, three cups in one.

From perfect grief there need not he

Wisdom or even memory;

One thing then learned remains to me,

The woodspurge has a cup of three.

P.2.

Iniuria solvit amorem.

P.4. In our young age it’s impossible to realise the real

Value of Youth. But don’t be afraid, you will revive in your children.

P.13.

SONNET 2

When forty winters shall beseige thy brow,

And dig deep trenches in thy beauty’s field,

Thy youth’s proud livery, so gazed on now,

Will be a tatter’d weed, of small worth held:

Then being ask’d where all thy beauty lies,

Where all the treasure of thy lusty days,

To say, within thine own deep-sunken eyes,

Were an all-eating shame and thriftless praise.

How much more praise deserved thy beauty’s use,

If thou couldst answer ‘This fair child of mine

Shall sum my count and make my old excuse,’

Proving his beauty by succession thine!

This were to be new made when thou art old,

And see thy blood warm when thou feel’st it cold.

р.5 But still Youth and Age will argue

And Age will always envy to Youth

p.4 Youth and Age

Crabid Age and Youth

Cannot live together

Youth is full of pleasance

Age is full of care.

Youth like summer morn

Age like Winter Weather-

сold

Age is weak and cold

Youth is Wild, Age is faim

Youth! I do adore thee!

P.15. Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets are masterpieces. Shakespeare
expressed in them the variety of human nature.

P.1.

P.2. Amantes amentes

P.16.

SONNET 16

But wherefore do not you a mightier way

Make war upon this bloody tyrant, Time?

And fortify yourself in your decay

With means more blessed than my barren rhyme?

Now stand you on the top of happy hours,

And many maiden gardens yet unset

With virtuous wish would bear your living flowers,

Much liker than your painted counterfeit:

So should the lines of life that life repair,

Which this, Time’s pencil, or my pupil pen,

Neither in inward worth nor outward fair,

Can make you live yourself in eyes of men.

To give away yourself keeps yourself still,

And you must live, drawn by your own sweet skill.

Р.17.All human life is there in his plays; its greatness and its
imperfections are alike. William Shakespeare possesses some special
merit for every generation. Whether he is writing of history, or love,
or tragedy, or comedy, things have meaning and value. It was his genius
that gave the world poetry of a cleanest beauty.

P.18.

SONNET 66

Tired with all these, for restful death I cry,

As, to behold desert a beggar born,

And needy nothing trimm’d in jollity,

And purest faith unhappily forsworn,

And guilded honour shamefully misplaced,

And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,

And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,

And strength by limping sway disabled,

And art made tongue-tied by authority,

And folly doctor-like controlling skill,

And simple truth miscall’d simplicity,

And captive good attending captain ill:

Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,

Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

Р.17

SONNET 55

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments

Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme;

But you shall shine more bright in these contents

Than unswept stone besmear’d with sluttish time.

When wasteful war shall statues overturn,

And broils root out the work of masonry,

Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn

The living record of your memory.

‘Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity

Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room

Even in the eyes of all posterity

That wear this world out to the ending doom.

So, till the judgment that yourself arise,

You live in this, and dwell in lover’s eyes.

P.14.

Sonnet 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments, Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove:

O, no; it is an ever-fixed mark,

That looks on tempests, and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wandering bark,

Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken

Love’s and time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Within his bending sickle’s compass come

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks

But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error, and upon me proved,

I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

P.5. And now about a great lover the famous poet G.G.Byron.

P.4. When the boy was 16 he fell in love with Mary Ann Chaworth. But the
girl did not like Byron and later married another man. Byron could not
so easy forget her and his love for her gave a sad colouring to all his
future life.

P. 5. In 1815 Byron married Isabella Lilborne, a cold and pedantic
woman. They had a daughter, whom Byron loved very much. But he was not
happy with his wife, and soon they parted.

P.2 Amoris vulnus sana idem, qui facit.

Р. 11

Р.5. From “The Book of life”:

The Adventure of life is to learn,

The Purpose of life is to grow,

The Nature of life is to change,

The Opportunity of life is to search,

The Secret of life is to dare,

The Spice of life is to be friend,

The Beauty of life is to give,

The Joy of life is to love.

P.19. “She Walks In Beauty”

She walks in beauty, like the night,

Of cloudiness climes and starry skies:

and all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

Thus mellowed to that tender light

Which Heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impaired the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o’er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express,

How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that check, and o’er that brow,

So soft, so calm, so eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below

A heart whose love is innocent?

P.2. Si vis amari, ama?

P.16.

i would be a child.

Few are my years, and yet I feel

The world was near designed for me Ah?

Why do darkening shades conceal

The hour when man must cease to be?

Once I beheld a splendid dream

A visionary scene of bliss!

Truth? Wherefore did thy hated beam

Awake me to a world like this?

I loved – but those I loved are gone;

Had friends – my early friends are fled;

How cheer lees feels the hart alone,

When all the former hopes are dead!

The heart – the heart – is lonely still.

P.4 it’s difficult to explain what love is, you can only understand how
important it is when it stops so, don’t be worried about love and try to
live for it. Because, perhaps, it is the only thing that makes life –
worth living.
